Hamas's Victory: Positive for All
While I recognize the potentially explosive situation with Hamas, I humbly submit that Hamas' victory may very well prove to be beneficial to all concerned parties. It is common wisdom that a peace deal acceptable to Likud is acceptable to all in the U.S. and Israel. Similarly, a peace deal acceptable to Hamas will be acceptable to all in the Arab and Muslim world. To read more click here.

It is hopeful to run across articles (I saw it in Haaretz) such as yours that see the election of Hamas as an opportunity to get out of the present Hobbesian trap.
I have taken the liberty of quoting from it and linking to it at the Republican blog RedSate.com: http://www.redstate.com/comments/2006/1/30/0394/48872/24#24
A quick question though - you indicated that Hamas' need for aid should also help to moderate its behavior, but then refer to Iran as being willing to fund the gap. If Iran is willing to provide large amounts of funding, this would seem to undercut your point - it would give Iran influence, not Israel or Western donors, or at least allow Hamas to play the donors off against each other. Am I missing something?

I guess it was too long; here's the link
Very interesting piece. I was anxious to see your perspective, and was hoping you would put out something about this.
I tend to agree with you; at the very least, we should look for the silver lining in this. I think this has a lot to do with power, and Hamas is really the only group the Palestinians have powerful enough to stop the violence. Hopefully, as "only Nixon could go to China," so too can only Hamas prevent terrorism and advance peace.
Mike,
Hamas stop the violence which they started? What a wicked sense of humor you have, my friend.
There is an old Light Bulb Joke.
How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
One... If the light bulb WANTS to change.
Why should HAMAS change? I am baffled as to why you think they have an incentive to change. The withdrawal from the Gaza looks to them like they are making progress in their goal of driving Jews into the sea. Why should they stop killing Jews?
Oh, I know, you are trying to put a good face on this debacle, but it is a debacle. The "Only Nixon Could Open China" scenario is true, but I cannot for the life me understand why you think HAMAS has to change.
There was no Hamas before the occupation. Israel helpted form Hamas as a counter to Arafat's secular Fatah. You moronic rednecks just dont get it.
Hamas,a terrorist orginization, has not renounced its own evil and despiciable ways! It continues to demand the destruction of its neighbor Israel. It continues to fire rockets into Israel,an ACT of WAR. It now has "succeeded" IT HAS a full fleged WAR on its hands. The Palistinians have only to look in a mirror to find blame. They made their bed with a Terror group and now they will pay a dear price. Hamas has failed at every turn to Help its' fellow Palestinians. It has run the goverment to ruin by NOT denouncing TERROR! Where in the KORAN "all praises to Allah" does it allow the killing of innocent women and children? This terror group will not find 72 virgins awaiting them, but eternal hellfire and damnation only now.

With all due respect to the author, the title would be laughable if the Middle Eastern situation were not so serious. Hamas' victory is anything but positive, especially for Israel. Hamas has as its primary goal the elimination of its Jewish neighbors. The PLA was founded by Arafat some 50 years ago with the same objective, which has not changed. Most if not all the countries surrounding Israel have stated the same aim at some time or another, Iran being the latest example. These countries do not even show Israel on their maps of the region. This irrational hatred of Israel, and any nation which supports it, is instilled into the impressionable minds of Muslim youth from early childhood, confining them in a personal prison of anger and hatred from which many are willing to find release from a (to them)loveless world by becoming suicide bombers. This gross evil, for which I, as a Christian, believe its teachers and preachers will one day have to give account before a just God,is apparently defended or sidestepped by most Islamic leaders and largely ignored by the rest of the world. We do so at great risk, because an all-out conflict in the Middle East will have major repercussions throughout the world.
