When the attacks happened in London, I was studying abroad in Switzerland. It was very interesting for me because I was in Europe during the attacks, but I was not in the European Union. Most people there, myself included believed that an attack on London was not a question of if, but when. Tony Blair has had a very strong alliance with President Bush and has been a very large supporter of the war on Iraq and on Terrorism. Even though the suicide bombers were Muslim, they do not uphold the true values of the religion. I agree with the Muslims organizations who put together this article in saying that they do not represent true Islam, which is a very peaceful religion. However these Muslims hate the west because they believe that the US's only interest in them is for their oil, and they probably will continue to think this way. Its very disturbing because even though non extremist Muslims think that suicide bombing and terrorist attacks are completely wrong, they still continue to happen.
I think the bombings in London, although extremely tragic, were events that did not shock the world. Like Megan said, with Blair being such a close ally with Bush and his War on Terror, London was a prime target for terrorist groups. If only the Muslims in the Middle East thought more like the Muslims in the US (by wanting to promote a culture of peace and acceptance) then maybe we could finally get on the right path towards cultural acceptance or at least cultural tolerance.
We all wish that we could get on the right path for social acceptance, like Marissa said. But cultural acceptance can not begin with the western nations coming to terms with muslim extremists. It must first come between Muslims. It is great that the American Muslim organizations condemned the attacks, but surely the extremists view them as a people who have had their religion corrupted by western ideologies while the American Muslims view the extremists as terrorists. Before the extremist war on the west is stopped, muslims need to somewhat understand eachother, and teach the younger generations that their religion is a peaceful one and not one of terror.
After reading the article I feel better knowing that the American Muslim groups are at elast in support of us. Some people could see this as away of getting people to stop hating them because their muslim, but I see it as them truly having sympathy. London, like everyone else has said, was an obvious attack point. Certain Muslims hate America, and they will do anything to take us out, which includes take out our allies. Any other allies of ours should really be on the lookout beaus ethey could very well be next. As for the comments saying it didn't shocjk the world; i agree. But, people should still be on the lookout. A cultural acceptance to me is a longshot, it will take alot of effort from alot people before the Muslims from the east and the Americans ever accepted each other as allies, and I never see it happening.
