Is Muslimwakeup.com Undermining the Progressive Muslim Movement?

Most American Muslims seem to sympathize with the causes that underpin the philosophy of Progressive Muslims, but they strongly disapprove of MWU’s style. Click to read more:

As an American coming from out of a Christian tradition (Catholicism), I have very limited knowledge of Islam. Even that little is probably better than average - I did read the Koran in divinity school, and was impressed by how clearly it speaks from out of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Is it possible for you to concisely put the differences between progressive and conservative Muslims? Are the parallels with this same division within Christianity (and Judaism) close?

My blog so far lacks much input from Judaism and Islam.

Dear Paul, I will be writing something on the subject in the enar future and you are welcome to use it on your blog. I will also be posting very soon an article on the liberal Muslim perspective on Jews and Christians.

Assalaamulaikum Muqtedar,

Just stumbled on your blog. An interesting article. Some valid points you raise there, but I'm not sure I entirely agree. Isn't part of the problem that many Muslims are far too precious on matters that most other communities view as quite trite? Your reference to the way MWU raises sex is a case in point. I should point out that I've only seen MWU very recently.

Still, I'm glad this dialogue is happening. By way of background I'm a Muslim of Pakistani decent living in Australia.

Iqbal.
